DVD to MPEG2-TS Ripper for Linux
A while back I released a script that rips a DVD to MPEG-2 PS allowing the user to select one audio stream and one subtitle stream. Optionally the video can be requantised, using M2VRequantiser and an ISO image created. If creating an ISO image the chapters are also preserved from the original DVD. You can see the original post below.
I’ve just released an update to that original script which fixes subtitles in the original MPEG-2 PS mode but now adds the capability to rip MPEG-2 TS. The video stream can still be shrunk and in MPEG-2 PS mode the video is still
requantised but in MPEG-2 TS mode the video is re-encoded as H.264. Requantising is faster but can introduce artifacting. H.264 encoding is slower, but produces very good quality. I am currently re-importing my entire DVD collection, using this script, to my DLNA server using MPEG-2 TS and re-encoding the video to H.264. This gives me high quality rips at relatively small size (~3Gb) whilst preserving Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Perfect for playback via DLNA on the PS3
Some things to be aware of:
- Subtitles are only supported in MPEG-2 PS mode.
- MPEG-2 PS files created by this script are DVD compliant.
- ISO files created by this script will preserve the chapters from the original DVD.
- The PS3 can only play DTS audio in MPEG-2 PS streams when they have been authored to DVD.
- The PS3 can only play subtitles in MPEG-2 PS streams when they have been authored to DVD.
- The PS3 can’t play DTS audio in MPEG-2 TS streams therefore this script will transcode DTS to AC3 when in MPEG-2 TS mode.
If you are running Ubuntu then I strongly suggest you add the Avenard repository to your system as it includes recent builds of mplayer and x264.

I used DVD-to-MPG v1.1 (Dec 4, 2009) on a DVD and created mpg successfully:
$ DVD-to-MPG.sh /dev/sr0
In the process I selected to include a subtitle.
The mpg file is served via mediatomb to PS3.
Problem: PS3 does not recognize any subtitle: triangle -> Subtitle Options:
“There are no subtitle options available”
Was this functionality tested?
Any suggestions to debug are much appreciated.
PS3 firmware 3.15
Thanks

@vic: Yes, subtitles were tested. Sadly, the PS3 doesn’t support subtitles when the media files are streamed. If you want to rip a film, keeping subtitles and be able to view them then do the following: Rip the DVD with DVD-to-MPG, select MPEG-2 PS as the target format and burn the MPEG-2 PS file to DVD-R. Now you can watch the DVD-R as normal and use Triangle -> Subtitle Options to select the subtitles. Currently, DVD-to-MPG can’t add subtitles to MPEG-2 TS files but they may change in the future. All the above points are documented in the DVD-to-MPG README file.

Hello.
Do you have a good solution for this setup.
Sony Bravia KDL40V5500
Netgear ReadyNas Server
Denon 1507 Reciever
TV -> Optical -> Reciever
TV -> LAN cable -> Linksys Router/Switch – > NAS
I would like to watch copies of my dvd’s from my NAS.
I dont have a PS3,XBox or simular.
How can I rip a DVD in a propper maner?
I have done the following.
DVDSchink, made a big VOB file. Good picture, Real Dolby Digital Audio and sadly NO SUBTITLES!!!
Ok
Then I tried ImToo DVD Ripper and JoboShare DVD Ripper.
I Was able to in thess programs to select 1 subtitel and Dolby Digital Sound, but when the file i placed on the NAS and the file is started the picture is OK, but not as good as DVD Schink, and I see the SUBTITLES and my surround reciever writes DOLBY DIGITAL, ok it looks good, but then I got the disappointment. When I Convert a Test DVD, The Calibrator i discover that the sound is not real dolby digital but only pro logic, not stereo behind….
How can I rip a dvd to MPEG2 that will keep the correct Dolby Digital audio track and at the same time burn the subtitles to the picture. So it is possible from my Bravia TV to visit my NAS and start a film.
And with using a device like a PS3,XBox or sim.
I am looking forward to hear from u.
